The town received its name in summer 1849 when commissioners changed the planned name Summerset due to unexpectedly cold weather conditions.
The John Wayne Birthplace Museum contains artifacts, scripts, and costumes related to the legendary actor who was born in this town.
The Madison County Historical Society maintains a complex of fourteen historical buildings, including the Victorian Bevington Mansion from 1856.
