Walnut Woods State Park, State park in West Des Moines, United States.
Walnut Woods State Park is a 260-acre park along the Raccoon River that contains North America's largest natural concentration of black walnut trees. The grounds feature hiking trails, picnic areas, and a riverside setting shaped by the river's seasonal changes.
A limestone and timber lodge built in the 1930s stands as the park's main gathering space and event venue. This structure reflects the public works era when this area was developed into the park it is today.
The park is known locally as a haven for observing more than ninety bird species in their natural habitat. People come here to watch and photograph wildlife throughout the seasons.
The park provides twenty-three campsites, with eight featuring electrical hookups, along with modern restroom facilities and designated areas for recreational vehicles. Riverbank trails may shift or become muddy depending on water levels and weather, so wear appropriate footwear.
The park's location at river level means its banks continuously shift and reshape as the Raccoon River flows and changes. Return visits reveal how the landscape evolves naturally over time.
