The Chapin Park Historic District encompasses 260 buildings and 3 sites across 87 acres north of downtown South Bend, featuring diverse architectural styles.
The district developed between 1890 and 1910 on the former estate of Horatio Chapin, an early settler who established his presence in South Bend during 1857.
The neighborhood contains notable structures including the Horatio Chapin House, Judge Andrew Anderson House, Hodson's Castle, and South Bend Civic Theater.
The district boundaries follow the St. Joseph River, Main Street, Madison Street, Rex Street, Lindsey Street, William Street, Leland Avenue, and Portage Avenue.
The district received National Register of Historic Places designation on February 4, 1982, recognizing its collection of late 19th and 20th century residential architecture.
