Herring Hotel, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Herring Hotel in Belle Plaine, Iowa is a three-story American Craftsman building constructed around 1900. It features a sun parlor with custom windows, terrazzo flooring, and an open staircase.
The building opened around 1900 and expanded to three stories in 1912 to accommodate more guests. A fire in 1914 destroyed the attic and roof, leading to reconstruction and the addition of modern amenities.
The hotel reflects the shift toward automobile travel in the early 1900s and its role in connecting communities. The sun parlor windows and terrazzo flooring show the design preferences of that era.
The hotel is located in Belle Plaine's downtown near the former railroad station and walkable from the town center. The building is currently closed to visitors and in poor condition, so access inside is not possible.
The hotel served as headquarters for the Lincoln Highway Glad Hand Club and was a crucial stop on one of America's first cross-country roads. Owner William Herring operated a shuttle service from the hotel to the train station for arriving travelers.
