Dream, Stone monument between Great Sphinx paws in Giza, Egypt
Dream is a granite stele positioned between the Great Sphinx's paws, serving as a royal monument with carved inscriptions and carved offerings. The stone stands upright in that narrow space, displaying text and images that commemorated the ruler's relationship to the sacred site.
This monument was erected to commemorate a major royal decision, with the ruler choosing to commission it at this sacred location. The stone itself came from an earlier temple structure, demonstrating how builders reclaimed materials from previous construction projects.
The stele records a divine message from the god Hor-em-akhet, offering the throne in exchange for clearing sand from the Sphinx. This narrative served as a public declaration of the ruler's sacred connection to the gods.
The monument is located in a narrow space between the Sphinx's front legs and is best viewed during early morning hours when fewer visitors are present. Access requires careful movement since the area is confined and rocky.
A large irregular crack runs through the stone, destroying approximately half of the original carved text. This damage allows visitors to witness how time and natural forces affect ancient monuments and makes the loss visible on the stone itself.
