Blue Mustang, Fiberglass sculpture at Denver International Airport, US
Blue Mustang is a fiberglass sculpture at the entrance of Denver International Airport in Colorado. The nine-meter-tall rearing horse stands along Peña Boulevard and displays glowing red eyes.
Luis Jiménez received the commission for this sculpture in 1993 and worked on it for more than a decade. The artist died tragically in 2006 when a section of the work fell on him during fabrication, but his family completed the installation two years later.
The bright blue coloring and LED-illuminated eyes reflect the artist's connection to Mexican murals and his father's neon sign business in Texas. The rearing horse stance recalls the wild mustangs of the American prairie.
The work is visible from Peña Boulevard when driving to the airport, but stopping or parking nearby is not allowed. The sculpture is best viewed during daylight when the blue color appears most vivid.
Local residents gave the sculpture the nickname Blucifer, and during its first five years multiple petitions called for its removal. Despite the controversy, the work became a recognized city landmark and appears regularly in local media.
