The terrain is hilly and wooded, with access to Walnut Creek and surrounding limestone bluffs.
The land that became Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park was purchased by the city of Austin in 1964. Before that, it belonged to the Gracy family as part of their farm. The area had earlier been inhabited by the Tonkawa people, and archaeological finds have been made there.
The park's name comes from Walnut Creek, which runs along its edge below limestone bluffs. Its 15 miles of trails draw local mountain bikers, and a large off-leash area makes it a regular stop for dog owners from across northeast Austin.
