The Wolverine Dilworth Hotel is a four-story red brick building with neoclassical design that opened in 1912 in Boyne City. Its exterior features simple decorative details above the windows and a flat roof with metal cornice, while the interior includes pillars, a coffered ceiling, and a dining room with a large fireplace and stained glass transoms.
The hotel was established by the Boyne City Hotel Company in 1911 and opened in 1912 during a period when the city was growing rapidly thanks to its lumber mills and could support nearly 6000 residents. After World War I, declining timber supplies led to economic challenges, but the building persisted and was later purchased by Wesley Dilworth, becoming a venue for community gatherings.
The hotel was founded by the community during the lumber boom and served as a central gathering place for social events. The dining hall hosted annual celebrations like the Smelt Run Banquet, where locals came together to mark important occasions and strengthen community bonds.
The hotel sits in downtown Boyne City near Lake Charlevoix, surrounded by shops and restaurants within walking distance. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and is currently undergoing restoration with plans to reopen with approximately 26 rooms, a restaurant, and a pub.
The hotel originally featured covered porches on three sides that were removed over time but have been reconstructed during restoration using historical photographs as guides. This careful recreation shows how the community values preserving the building's original appearance and character.
