Florham

Florham is a Baroque Revival mansion built in 1899 in Madison, New Jersey. The building displays symmetrical facades, elaborate stone carvings, grand staircases, and ornamental details throughout its rooms and hallways.

The renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White designed this mansion in 1899 for Florence Vanderbilt and Hamilton Twombly. It was built during the peak of American industrial wealth, when the ultra-rich competed through grand residential architecture.

The name combines the first names of the original owners, Florence and Hamilton. Walking through the rooms, you sense how the wealthy lived during America's industrial boom era.

The estate now functions as part of Fairleigh Dickinson University and is open to visitors through guided tours. Plan to spend time looking at the interior details, and check in advance for tour availability before you arrive.

The mansion preserves original wooden panels and intricate ceiling work from the time it was built. These handcrafted details have survived more than a century, offering a rare glimpse into the skill of artisans who worked during that era.
