Diawling National Park

The national park extends over 15,600 hectares of saline floodplains in the lower delta of the Senegal River with marsh pools and sand dunes.

Local tribes opposed the park's establishment in 1991, fearing restrictions on their traditional grazing and fishing activities would end their centuries-old lifestyle.

The park permits controlled traditional activities such as gathering, harvesting, fishing, and grazing, maintaining a balance between conservation and local practices.

The park contains three coastal lagoons and an estuarine zone of mangroves that function as feeding grounds for over 220 bird species.

The last West African lion in the region disappeared in 1970, followed by the red-fronted gazelle in 1991, marking significant changes in local wildlife.
