Great Mosque of Touba

The Great Mosque of Touba is a major religious structure in Senegal featuring seven minarets and multiple domes. The building can accommodate approximately 7,000 worshippers and houses an extensive library with tens of thousands of volumes.

Construction began in 1932 under Mamadu Mustafâ Mbacke's direction, but the project faced significant interruptions. The first phase was completed in 1963 after work had been suspended for several years.

The mosque stands as the spiritual heart of the Mouride brotherhood and draws followers for significant religious celebrations throughout the year. For visitors, the site represents the deep faith and devotion of this spiritual community.

Access is available from the city of Dakar, with organized tours offered regularly. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and remember this is an active place of worship with specific protocols.

Every February, millions of pilgrims gather for the Grand Magal, making it the largest religious gathering in Senegal's Diourbel region. This festival is a defining event that draws people from across the country and beyond.
