L’Aire Marine Protégée du Bamboung

The Bamboung Marine Protected Area spans 6,800 hectares of mangroves, waterways, and estuarine zones within the Sine-Saloum Delta ecosystem.

The Senegalese government established this marine sanctuary through Decree 2004-1408 on November 4, 2004, to protect marine resources and support sustainable management.

Fourteen local villages maintain and manage the protected area, implementing traditional fishing practices while preserving the natural resources for future generations.

Visitors can explore the marine reserve through the Kër Bamboung eco-tourism camp, which provides accommodations and educational programs about local ecosystems.

The protected area contains twenty shellfish mounds and supports 85 fish species, 220 bird species, and rare mammals including African manatees and Atlantic humpback dolphins.
