Denton Bridge, Girder road bridge in Banjul, Gambia
Denton Bridge is a steel girder road bridge that connects St. Mary's Island to mainland Gambia, crossing the Tanbi Wetland Complex. The structure carries four traffic lanes and spans approximately 210 meters in total length.
The bridge was named after Sir George Chardin Denton, the colonial administrator who governed Gambia from 1900 to 1911 and shaped the region's infrastructure. It has since become the main transportation link connecting the capital city to the rest of the country.
Local residents refer to the bridge area as Check Point Charlie due to the continuous presence of police and military personnel.
The bridge provides the only direct road access to Banjul, so traffic can back up during peak hours. Plan your crossing outside of rush times if you want a smoother journey across.
The bridge passes over Oyster Creek at the exact point where the Tanbi Wetland Complex meets the Atlantic Ocean. This location offers a rare view of where freshwater wetlands transition directly into salt water ecosystems.
