Stade Olympique, National football stadium in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The Stade Olympique is a sports stadium in the Tevragh-Zeina district of Nouakchott, with a grass field at its center, a running track around it, and concrete seating on all sides. It is built to host both football matches and athletics events, with a capacity of around 20,000 spectators.
Work on the stadium started in January 1980, and it officially opened on July 14, 1983. It was one of the first large sports facilities built in the country, at a time when organized sporting infrastructure was still taking shape.
The Stade Olympique is the main gathering point for football fans during national team matches, and the stands fill quickly on those occasions. Football is by far the most followed sport in Mauritania, and this venue is where that passion is most openly expressed.
The stadium sits in the Tevragh-Zeina district and is reachable from most parts of Nouakchott without too much difficulty. On match days or event days, arriving early makes access easier, as the area around the entrances can get crowded.
Although the stadium is most associated with football, the athletics track is a fully functional part of the venue and is used for national championships. This makes it one of the few places in the country where runners and field athletes share the same ground as football players.
