Kuching International Airport, International airport in Kuching, Malaysia

Kuching International Airport is an international airport in Kuching, Malaysia, handling several million passengers each year through two separate terminals. The facility sits about 11 kilometers south of the city center and serves as the main aviation gateway for Malaysian Borneo.

The beginnings trace back to 1938, when a modest airstrip roughly 600 meters long was laid out. In September 1950, the facility was officially opened as an international airport and has grown steadily with the region's air traffic ever since.

The airport takes its name from Kuching, a city whose name some connect to the Malay word for cat, while others trace it to a river or a fruit. Travelers often notice cat sculptures and motifs in the terminal, a playful nod to this local legend that adds character to the transit experience.

Taxis and ride services provide the link between the terminal and the city center, since no regular bus line runs directly to the airport. For arrivals and departures, allow enough time for the journey and possible waits at security checks, especially during busy periods.

The civilian terminal shares its grounds with a Royal Malaysian Air Force base, though both sections operate separately. Passengers occasionally spot military aircraft on neighboring taxiways, an uncommon sight at a commercial airport.
