The stadium's name, Stadium Negara, means "Nation Stadium" in Malay. It was built for indoor sports such as badminton and for cultural shows, and in February 2003 it was listed as a national heritage building. Its programme has ranged from the 1992 Thomas Cup badminton to the 1975 Muhammad Ali versus Joe Bugner boxing match.
The venue is easily accessible by public transportation and located near several train stations in the city center. It is advisable to arrive early, especially during events, to allow time for orientation and finding your way around.
The stadium's roof is a shallow ribbed dome of grey square panels set in concentric rings around a small central circle, with a band of vertical tan slats below it on thin diagonal struts. The entrance canopy carries the words "STADIUM NEGARA" in capitals. In February 2003 the building was listed as a national heritage building.
