Mare de Déu de Canòlich

The Mare de Déu de Canòlich is a small chapel set high in the Pyrenees, built with thick stone walls and pitched roofs typical of mountain construction. The building sits among spruce trees and meadows, offering wide views across the valley from its hillside position.

The sanctuary was first mentioned in 1176 and has deep roots as a pilgrimage site. The current structure dates to the early twentieth century, built on top of older Romanesque foundations.

The shrine honors a veneration of Mary that runs deep in the mountain community of Sant Julià. Visitors find a place where local people gather for pilgrimages and keep their religious tradition alive.

The site is reached on foot and requires a reasonable climb over mountain paths at this elevation. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing, as conditions in the mountains can change quickly.

A twelfth-century statue of Mary is the heart of this sanctuary and was later formally crowned in Rome. This sacred sculpture is one of the most precious objects in Sant Julià parish church and draws worshippers from across the region.
