Nuristan National Park

The protected area spans across mountainous forests with deep valleys, supporting numerous species native to eastern Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region.

The region, formerly known as Kafiristan, underwent significant changes when its inhabitants converted to Islam in 1895 under Afghan rule.

The Nuristani people maintain distinct traditions and social structures, with communities spread throughout small villages across the mountainous terrain.

Access to the park requires extensive preparation due to limited infrastructure, with summer months providing the most favorable conditions for exploration.

The national park contains populations of snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, and markhor goats within its protected boundaries.
