Los Hornitos Formation, Geological formation in Atacama Region, Chile.
Los Hornitos Formation is a geological deposit in the Atacama Region made up of limestone, sandstone, conglomerate, and marl layers stacked across the landscape. These rock sequences tell the story of ancient environments and contain remains of creatures that lived millions of years ago.
This formation took shape during the Early Cretaceous period around 105 million years ago when granite pushed into the existing layers. Earlier researchers mistakenly placed it in a younger time period, but modern studies established its true age.
Scientists from multiple research institutions investigate this formation to document the geological processes that shaped northern Chile during the Cretaceous period.
The area is accessible through open study zones where the rock layers are exposed and visible. Visitors should be prepared for the harsh, exposed desert setting and bring suitable equipment for the arid environment.
A distinctive layer of volcanic rock stands out within the formation for its unique composition compared to the surrounding deposits. This volcanic layer and the marly rocks around it preserve remains of massive dinosaurs that roamed this region long ago.
