Sharjah International Airport, International airport in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Sharjah International Airport is an international airport in the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The facility has several terminals and cargo areas on a site with runways and processing halls.
The beginnings date back to 1932 when a first flight connection was created here. The official opening as an international airport took place in 1977 after major construction work.
The name comes from the emirate itself and the terminal displays Arabic architectural elements in the waiting areas. Travelers experience a mix of regional shops and international services here.
The terminal is located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the center of Sharjah and can be reached by taxi or rental car. Processing usually proceeds quickly but it is still advisable to arrive in good time.
The facility serves as the home base for Air Arabia, the first low-cost airline in the region since 2003. This airline shapes the activity and brings many passengers on short routes to the Middle East and beyond.
