National Bank of Dubai, Financial skyscraper in Deira, United Arab Emirates
The National Bank of Dubai is a 125-meter skyscraper with 20 floors in Deira, distinguished by gold-coated glass and gray granite facades. Located on Baniyas Road near Dubai Creek, the building houses banking facilities, office spaces, and underground parking.
Built in 1998 to house the headquarters of the National Bank of Dubai, the tower was designed by the offices of Norr and Carlos Ott. At 125 metres it was the fifth-tallest building in Dubai at the time and remains the tallest in Deira. Its floor area is only 18,000 m².
The sail-like curve of the glass facade echoes the hulls of the wooden dhows that docked along Dubai Creek, a form the architects also drew on for the Burj Al Arab. The building stands in Deira, the old downtown on the creek's eastern bank, where the boat traffic that inspired it still passes.
The building sits on Baniyas Road in a central location easily accessible from other parts of Dubai. Note that the interior primarily serves banking functions and is not open for public tours.
The sail-like curve was drawn from the hulls of dhows moored in Dubai Creek, a form the architects Norr and Carlos Ott used here before the same idea shaped the Burj Al Arab. The tower rises 125 metres, making it the tallest building in Deira.
