Fototeka Marubi

Fototeka Marubi is a photo library and museum in Shkodër that houses roughly 150,000 glass plates and photographs. This collection documents Albanian life from the 19th century onward and is displayed across multiple floors.

Pietro Marubi opened the first photography studio in Albania in 1856 and started a family legacy. This inheritance continued through three generations until Geg Marubi in 1984.

The exhibitions show Albanian society through photography of independence movements, local traditions, and regional customs across generations. You can see how people lived then and what mattered to their communities.

This museum is easy to navigate with wheelchair access throughout the building. You should allow time to explore multiple floors at a comfortable pace.

The collection has been systematically cataloged since 1919 and captures portraits of freedom fighters as well as ordinary citizens. This documentary care makes it possible to trace individual people and their stories across time.
