Kapan, Regional capital in Syunik Province, Armenia
Kapan sits in the Voghji River valley at about 910 meters elevation, surrounded by the northern slopes of Mount Khustup. The town spreads across this elevated location with views over the landscape of Syunik Province.
In the late 9th century, the settlement became a fortified residence of the Dzagikian princes and served as capital of the Kingdom of Syunik. This period shaped the settlement's importance as a regional center.
The Geology Museum displays mineral collections and artifacts connected to the region's mining past. Visitors can see objects that show how important mining work has been to the life of people here.
The airport reopened in 2023 and offers regular flights to Yerevan, while the M-2 road provides ground transportation. Both options give visitors different ways to reach and leave the town.
The name Kapan comes from Classical Armenian meaning mountain pass, but was changed to Ghap'an before returning to its original form in 1991. This name history reflects the different periods the town experienced.
