Martuni, Mountain town in Gegharkunik Province, Armenia
Martuni sits on the southern shore of Lake Sevan at an elevation of 1,510 meters, spreading across mountain slopes with open parkland to the north and valley terrain to the south. The settlement follows the natural landforms and blends highland and lakeside settings.
The settlement was originally known as Nerkin Gharanlugh until 1926, when it received its present name. The new name honors Aleksandr Myasnikyan, an Armenian revolutionary leader who used the pseudonym Martuni.
The town holds the Church of the Holy Mother of God built in 1886 and features traditional Armenian cross-stones that showcase regional religious craftsmanship. These artworks shape the character of the place and reflect the community's spiritual traditions.
The town is reachable via direct road from Yerevan, located roughly 126 kilometers away. Regular bus services connect the area with other communities around Lake Sevan.
Local food traditions feature hemp seed kufteh, a dish brought by Armenian refugees from Alashkert that has become part of the community. This preparation remains a regular part of meals during religious fasting periods today.
