Gegharkunik Province

Gegharkunik is a province in Armenia that centers on Lake Sevan, a large freshwater body surrounded by mountain terrain. Several towns scattered across the region serve as administrative and population centers, each with its own character and connections.

The province takes its name from Gegham, an ancient Armenian king who ruled this territory in early times. This royal connection reflects how the region has been organized and inhabited across many centuries.

The Sevanavank Monastery sits on a peninsula in the lake and shows how religious communities shaped life in this region over centuries. When you visit, you notice how the building relates to the water and mountains, revealing what this place means to local people.

The region is best explored by using one of the five main towns as a base, with Gavar serving as the largest administrative hub. Plan to travel between different towns to see various parts of the province, as distances across the mountainous terrain require travel time.

The lake displays a surprising feature: its water color shifts from light to dark blue depending on weather and sunlight. Beneath the surface lives the Sevan trout, a rare fish found nowhere else in the world, making the water ecosystem truly special.
