Berdkunk Fortress

The fortress stands on a prominent rocky hill with fortified walls constructed from large stone blocks without mortar, following cyclopean architectural techniques.

The fortress dates back to the early Bronze Age, and during medieval times, a new stronghold was built upon its ruins, earning its name Aghkala.

Local elderly residents refer to the structure as Ishkanats fortress, preserving oral traditions about its role as a noble residence through generations.

The fortress remains accessible throughout spring to late autumn, with winter visits limited due to weather conditions in the Armenian highlands.

The structure features circular watchtowers cemented with lime mortar and defensive trenches stretching from west to east across its perimeter.
