Hayravank Monastery, Medieval monastery in Gegharkunik Province, Armenia
Hayravank is a monastery complex in Gegharkunik Province situated on the shores of Lake Sevan, composed of a church with four apses, a chapel, and a gavit built from basalt stone. The structures sit on a hillside overlooking the water with views of surrounding mountains.
The monastery was founded in the 9th century with the construction of its main church, reflecting the architectural preferences of early Armenian Christianity. A chapel was added in the 10th century and a gavit in the 12th century, showing how the site developed over generations.
The cemetery surrounding the monastery displays traditional Armenian khachkars, ornate stone crosses with intricate carvings that reveal the community's long-standing burial traditions and spiritual devotion.
The site sits at an elevation of about 1900 meters and is accessible by car via a mountain road, most easily visited during warmer months. The lakeside setting and mountain terrain around the monastery allow for exploration, though paths can be steep or uneven in places.
The gavit features an early example of patterned stone masonry using alternating reddish and gray basalt blocks arranged with precise geometric care. This carefully laid stonework demonstrates the skilled craftsmanship of medieval Armenian builders.
