Erebuni Fortress, Archaeological fortress in Erebuni District, Armenia

Erebuni Fortress is an ancient military stronghold built from stone and mud bricks on Arin Berd hill in Yerevan, dating to the 8th century BC. The complex contains defensive walls, residential quarters, and religious structures spread across the hilltop.

King Argishti I established this fortified site in 782 BC as a military stronghold for the Urartian civilization. The settlement became strategically important for controlling this mountainous region.

The fortress displays temples, royal chambers, and an assembly hall with preserved wall paintings that show how religious and court life functioned in this ancient civilization. Walking through these spaces helps you understand how different groups moved and worked within the stronghold.

The site sits on a steep hill, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the climb. The grounds are not fully excavated, so stay on marked pathways and watch for uneven surfaces.

Excavations have uncovered tens of thousands of objects, including preserved grain that shows how Urartians farmed and fed themselves. These organic remains are unusually well preserved and offer insight into daily life nearly 3000 years ago.
