Byurakan Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Byurakan, Armenia.

Byurakan Observatory is an astronomical facility situated on the slopes of Mount Aragats, housing multiple silver domes and research centers. The installation sits at around 1,400 meters in elevation and contains five primary telescopes for observation work.

Founded in 1946 by Viktor Ambartsumian, the facility housed the largest telescope in the Soviet Union during that era. This original 2.6-meter Cassegrain reflector marked the beginning of modern astronomical work at the location.

The facility has served as a center for scientific exchange in Armenia since its establishment. It continues to draw astronomers and students from around the world, shaping how people in the region view research and discovery.

Visitors can explore the grounds during daylight hours, with guided tours available in multiple languages. The mountain location means that weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended, particularly during cooler months.

Scientists here discovered over 1,000 flare stars and catalogued numerous supernovae, making the facility a center for this type of research. The work also led to the discovery of hundreds of Herbig-Haro objects, which transformed understanding of star formation.
