Red Bridge, Stone bridge in Kentron District, Armenia
The Red Bridge is a structure made from red tuff stone that spans 80 meters across the Hrazdan River and stands about 11 meters high. It is supported by four arches, with the two central ones featuring a distinctive curved shape, while the two outer arches meet the riverbanks.
The structure was built in 1679 and originally served as a connection between Yerevan Fortress and the Ararat Plain. An earthquake destroyed the original construction, leading to its careful restoration in 1830.
The bridge carries the name of Khoja-plav, a benefactor who funded its reconstruction, reflecting how Armenians have long connected their monuments to those who helped restore them. Locals view it as a symbol of continuity and community care woven into the city's physical fabric.
The structure is easy to reach on foot from central Yerevan and lies near several other points of interest. It is best explored during daytime when light brings out the red color of the stone to its best advantage.
The two central arches have an unusual wavy curved form that differs from the straight arches at the riverbanks, giving the bridge a distinctive visual character. This asymmetrical arch design is uncommon in architecture and makes the structure immediately recognizable.
