Trchkan waterfall, 23-meter-high mountain waterfall in Northern Armenia
Trchkan is a waterfall in northern Armenia where water from the Chichkan River plunges vertically over a rock edge. At around 23 meters, it ranks among the tallest single-drop waterfalls in the country.
The waterfall gained protected status in 2008 and received further environmental recognition in 2011 after locals prevented the construction of a hydropower station. This protection safeguarded the site for future generations.
The name Trchkan comes from Armenian and means "jumping," inspired by the sight of trout leaping over the cascading water.
You can reach the site via a mountain road from Gyumri, with designated parking areas and picnic facilities available when you arrive. The walk involves crossing two streams on the way down to the waterfall.
During winter, the falling water creates frozen formations while still flowing continuously, which draws photographers and nature lovers to the spot. This blend of movement and ice crystals creates a rare visual experience.
