Garni Gorge

Garni Gorge is a rock formation near Yerevan featuring distinctive columnar basalt that rises vertically from the canyon walls in geometric patterns. These hexagonal columns stretch for several hundred meters along the cliffs, defining the gorge's dramatic structure.

The geological structures formed through volcanic processes when molten basalt lava cooled slowly and fractured into vertical columns. This natural division happened millions of years ago, creating the distinctive pattern visible today.

The gorge draws local artists and photographers who capture the geometric basalt columns under changing light throughout the day. This natural backdrop inspires creative work that celebrates the landscape's visual qualities.

The gorge is located about 30 kilometers from Yerevan and can be reached by minibus from the city's central bus station. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the path down involves uneven ground and steps.

The hexagonal basalt columns were created through a natural cooling process called contraction that produces perfectly angular shapes. This mathematically precise geometry forms without human intervention, making the site a geological marvel.
