Mother Armenia is a 20-metre hammered-copper statue of a young woman in a calm epic pose, set on a 21-metre pedestal of dark tuff on a hill beside the Black Fortress of Gyumri. Two-sided stone stairs and stepped basins lead up from the open field to the base. In one hand she holds the capital of Zvartnots Cathedral, in the other a palm branch.

The statue was erected in 1975 to mark a major historical anniversary and has stood at this location ever since. It represents a connection between local history and national memory that continues to draw visitors.

The rear of the copper figure shows Nemesis, the winged Greek goddess of retribution, a detail not visible from the front approach. On the hillside left of the stairs, a plain cross-stone-like pillar bears the inscription "1941-1945".
