Mother Armenia

Mother Armenia is a copper statue standing on a dark tuff pedestal near the Black Fortress of Gyumri, rising high above the surrounding landscape. The complex includes an eternal flame and a tomb of the unknown soldier alongside the main sculpture.

The statue was erected in 1975 to mark a major historical anniversary and has stood at this location ever since. It represents a connection between local history and national memory that continues to draw visitors.

The figure holds elements from Zvartnots Cathedral in one hand and a palm branch in the other, linking Armenian architectural traditions with hopes for peace. These symbols tell the story of Armenian identity and the values visitors encounter at this site.

The site is accessible year-round and you can explore the memorial at your own pace throughout the day. The monument sits near the Black Fortress, making it easy to visit multiple attractions during one visit.

The back of the sculpture features an image of Nemesis, the Greek goddess of retribution, a detail most visitors miss. This symbol adds a layer of deeper meaning to the work that goes beyond what is visible from the front.
