Namibe Province

Namibe Province encompasses 57,091 square kilometers of land, featuring a desert landscape alongside the Atlantic Ocean and mountainous terrain in its eastern regions.

The province, established as Moçâmedes District during Portuguese rule in 1840, received its current name in 1985 from the northern section of the Namib Desert.

The population includes Herero and Khoisan communities, maintaining traditional practices centered around fishing activities and agricultural techniques in the coastal settlements.

The Commercial Port of Moçâmedes and Yuri Gagarin Airport serve as primary transportation hubs for the movement of goods and passengers throughout the province.

Late Cretaceous fossils of sharks, turtles, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and sauropods have been discovered near Bentiaba desert and within Iona National Park.
