Bora-Bora

Bora-Bora is a volcanic island in French Polynesia shaped by two extinct peaks, with the higher one dominating the skyline. A turquoise lagoon surrounds the inner islands, while a protective coral reef forms a natural barrier at the outer edge.

The island served as a United States military supply base and airstrip during World War II, underlining its strategic importance in the Pacific region. Military installations left behind after the war became part of the island's landscape.

The name comes from the Tahitian word 'Porapora', meaning First Born, reflecting how local people understand their island's place in creation stories. This meaning remains part of everyday conversation and local pride.

Access is by flight to Motu Mute airport from Tahiti, followed by boat transfers to lodging areas around the lagoon. The best time to visit is during the drier months when weather is more stable.

The coral reef encircling the island creates a space with some of the richest marine habitats in the region. Divers and snorkelers can observe fish species found in only a handful of other locations.
