Puerto Río Tranquilo, Fishing village in Río Ibáñez, Chile.
Puerto Río Tranquilo is a small village on the southern shore of Lake General Carrera, in the Río Ibáñez area of Chilean Patagonia. It sits right at the water's edge and works as a base for exploring the lake by boat.
The village grew as a stopping point during the early opening of the Patagonian interior, when the lake was the main route connecting remote communities. The arrival of the Carretera Austral in the late 20th century linked it to the rest of Chile by road for the first time.
The name Puerto Río Tranquilo refers to the calm stretch of water that defines life here, and that stillness is easy to feel when walking along the shore. Locals and visitors share the same small waterfront, where boats come and go throughout the day.
The village is reached via the Carretera Austral and has basic accommodation and a few small shops for supplies. If you plan to go out on the lake, keep in mind that wind and water conditions can shift quickly and may affect your plans.
The lake beside the village is known as Lago Buenos Aires on the Argentine side of the border, even though it is the same body of water. This makes Lake General Carrera one of the few lakes in South America that carries two official names depending on which country you are in.
