Puerto Montt, Regional port city in Los Lagos, Chile
Puerto Montt is a Chilean port city on Reloncaví Bay in the Los Lagos region, roughly 620 miles (1,000 km) south of Santiago. Houses dot gentle slopes above the waterfront, while fishing boats and ferries fill the docks along the shore.
The settlement was founded in 1853 under President Manuel Montt to secure Chile's southern frontier. German immigrants arrived in the following decades and shaped the architecture and economy of the growing community.
The name Melipulli from the Mapuche language means „four hills
El Tepual Airport sits roughly 10 miles (16 km) northwest and offers connections to Santiago and other regions. Several bus companies run from here along the Pan-American Highway to neighboring towns and national parks.
Salmon from local farms appears in markets and restaurants along the waterfront. Ferries depart daily toward Chiloé Island and the southern fjords, their horns echoing across the water.
