Puente ferroviario Maule, Railway bridge in Maule, Chile
The Maule Railway Bridge spans across the Maule River with a steel structure supported by concrete pillars extending over two kilometers in length.
Constructed between 1882 and 1885 during the presidencies of Domingo Santa Maria and Jose Manuel Balmaceda, the bridge was engineered by Domingo V. Santa Maria.
The Ministry of Education of Chile designated the Maule Railway Bridge as a National Historical Monument in September 1993, recognizing its engineering heritage.
The bridge served as a vital transportation link connecting the Maule and Nuble regions, facilitating the movement of cargo and passengers through central Chile.
Before opening in 1885, the bridge underwent testing with a 49-meter-long train weighing 300 tons to verify its structural capabilities.
