Palacio de La Moneda, Presidential palace in Santiago, Chile
Palacio de La Moneda occupies an entire city block in downtown Santiago, featuring white walls and three internal courtyards connected by grand archways.
The building, completed in 1805 under architect Gioacchino Toesca's supervision, initially served as Chile's national mint before becoming the presidential headquarters in 1845.
The Palacio de La Moneda Cultural Center, situated beneath the palace's southern square, presents rotating exhibitions about Chilean heritage and contemporary art.
Visitors can watch the ceremonial changing of the guard, which occurs every two days with a military band performing traditional Chilean music.
The palace preserves specific bullet marks from the 1973 military coup as historical references, integrating them into the restored neoclassical architecture.
