Centro Cultural La Moneda, Underground arts centre and gallery beneath Plaza de la Ciudadanía in Santiago, Chile
Centro Cultural La Moneda is an underground arts center and gallery in Santiago, Chile, built beneath the Plaza de la Ciudadanía, next to the presidential palace of the same name. The facility spreads across several floors and uses a glass-slab roof to channel natural light into its exhibition rooms and a central atrium.
The center opened in the early 2000s as part of a large redesign of the plaza surrounding the presidential palace. The project came at a time when Santiago was working to bring cultural spaces into the heart of the city.
The center sits directly beneath the plaza in front of the presidential palace, a location that many visitors find surprising when they first arrive. Inside, the galleries draw a mix of locals and tourists who come to see both Chilean and international art in a space that feels open despite being underground.
Access to the center is through gentle ramps that connect all levels, making it easy to get around without using stairs. The galleries and cinema are spread across several floors, so it is worth planning enough time to move through the full space.
Inside the center, the Cineteca Nacional holds a digital archive of Chilean film and video that goes back several decades, covering productions that are hard to find anywhere else. It is one of the few places in South America where the public can explore this kind of deep audiovisual record in person.
