Embalse Cogoti, reservoir in Chile
Embalse Cogoti is a reservoir in the Coquimbo Region located north of Combarbalá. The dam is constructed from stone and concrete and reaches approximately 70 meters high, allowing it to store large volumes of water for regional use.
Construction of the reservoir took place between 1934 and 1939 to improve water supply in a region with low rainfall. In 2003 an inflatable dam system was added to increase the total water-holding capacity.
The name comes from the local Cogoti term with origins in Mapuche language. The reservoir is viewed by locals as an essential part of their water management and a gathering place for families seeking connection to the land.
The reservoir has an entrance gate with parking area and is easily accessible from nearby towns. Visitors should bring water and snacks since there are no shops directly at the location.
The reservoir is part of an integrated system of three connected basins including La Paloma and Recoleta that together store nearly one billion cubic meters of water. This makes it one of central Chile's most important coordinated water management systems.
