Mall Plaza La Serena, Shopping center in La Serena, Chile.
Mall Plaza La Serena is a shopping center in La Serena, Chile, spread across several floors with two department stores, around seventy shops, nine restaurants, and a cinema with seven screens. Underground parking runs below the building, making it one of the larger commercial spaces in the region.
The center opened in December 1998 as the fifth location in the Mall Plaza chain across Chile. Before it arrived, the region had no comparable large-scale commercial space, and its opening changed shopping habits in La Serena noticeably.
Inside the mall, a public library sits near one of the main entrances and draws families and students who come to read or study between errands. Seeing people settle in with books in the middle of a shopping center is something most visitors do not expect.
The layout is straightforward, with shops, restaurants, and the cinema all connected on the same site, so moving between them takes little effort. The underground parking makes it easy to arrive by car, even during busy periods.
The H&M store inside was the first location of that brand in Chile to install solar panels on its roof. At the time, using solar energy in retail was still very uncommon in the country, which made this store stand out.
