Chumbivilcas Province, Province in Cusco Department, Peru.

Chumbivilcas is a province in the Cusco region located in mountainous terrain between 2,000 and 4,000 meters in elevation. The landscape varies with steep slopes, valleys, and high plateaus marked by small settlements and farmland.

The province received its official establishment in 1825 through a decree during Peru's independence period. Since then, it has developed as an agricultural center in the high Andes.

The Qorilazo horsemen of this province keep alive traditional skills with horses, which you can observe during local celebrations and in rural settlements. Their techniques with lasso and animal handling remain part of daily farm work and shape the region's character.

Santo Tomas, the provincial capital, sits about 200 kilometers from Cusco and can be reached by regular bus services. Travel through the mountains takes time, so plan accordingly for the journey conditions.

The Takanakuy festival features a distinctive practice where ritualized fights between community members serve as conflict resolution. This ritual happens yearly and represents a unique form of social bonding rooted in the region's culture.
