Machu Picchu, Ancient city in Peru
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca site located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, on a 2,430-meter (7,970 ft) mountain ridge.
It was built around 1450, at the height of the Inca Empire and abandoned just over 100 years later, in 1572, because of the Spanish Conquest.
It is considered a masterpiece of architecture and a sacred place, representing the great creativity of the human being of that time.
It is currently the most visited tourist attraction in Peru and one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
Despite its location, the Spanish never found it; therefore, it was never plundered and destroyed as were many other Inca sites.
