Nevado Pastoruri

Nevado Pastoruri is a mountain summit in the Cordillera Blanca, located in the southern section of Huascarán National Park at 5,240 meters elevation. The peak displays steep terrain with permanent snowfields and a glacier that characterizes its upper reaches.

Indigenous peoples of the Andes established settlements near the peak and developed agricultural methods adapted to the extreme conditions of high altitude. These early cultures utilized the mountain's resources over many centuries.

Local communities view this peak as a sacred meeting point between earth and sky. This spiritual role continues to shape the traditional practices and ceremonies that take place on its slopes today.

Plan to spend two days in Huaraz for altitude adjustment before attempting the climb. Proper mountaineering equipment and good physical conditioning are essential for a safe ascent.

The glacier here has shrunk by roughly one-third of its original size since 1990, making it a critical site for climate research. Scientists study these changes to understand how climate change affects tropical mountains.
