Durán Canton, Administrative canton in Guayas Province, Ecuador
Durán is an administrative canton in Guayas Province, located on the eastern bank of the Guayas River. The territory covers approximately 342 square kilometers and is organized into three urban parishes: Eloy Alfaro, El Recreo, and Divino Niño.
The territory was originally a rural parish of Guayaquil before gaining independence as a canton in 1986 under President León Febres Cordero. This change marked an important shift toward local autonomy and governance.
The Sanctuary of the Divine Child Jesus draws pilgrims and visitors especially on December 25, when a major procession takes place. This site holds deep religious meaning for people across the region and serves as an important gathering place for shared celebrations.
The Unidad Nacional Bridge connects the canton directly to Guayaquil, making daily travel easy for residents and visitors. This main transportation link is essential for accessing urban centers and getting around the region.
The canton includes the ecological island of Santay, which features wooden walkways and protected mangrove forests reached by a dedicated pedestrian bridge. This natural reserve offers visitors a quiet escape within a larger urban area.
