Pucacuro National Reserve, Protected nature reserve in Loreto Region, Peru

Pucacuro National Reserve is a protected area in the Amazon rainforest that covers hundreds of thousands of hectares and includes rolling hills, river floodplains, seasonally flooded zones, swamps, and many oxbow lakes scattered throughout. The landscape shifts between drier forested slopes and wetter marshland, creating varied habitats that support different kinds of life.

The reserve was created in 2005 to protect the unique Napo moist forests and their natural resources from overuse and damage. This decision was part of Peru's broader effort to preserve the Amazon rainforest's biodiversity for the long term.

Indigenous groups living in the reserve maintain their traditional ways of life and work with conservation authorities to use resources in ways that benefit both people and nature.

Access to the reserve is through the town of Intuto, where rangers and local guides assist visitors and explain what activities are permitted. The best time to visit is during drier months when trails and waterways are easier to navigate.

The area is home to thirty plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, having vanished from other parts of the Amazon. These species exist in their current form only in this location, making the reserve valuable for scientific study.
