Tiputini Biodiversity Station, Research station in Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, Ecuador.
Tiputini Biodiversity Station is a research facility situated on approximately 638 hectares of primary rainforest along the north bank of the Tiputini River in eastern Ecuador. The grounds contain laboratory spaces, basic accommodation buildings, and a cafeteria where scientists conduct fieldwork.
Universidad San Francisco de Quito established this research facility in 1994 in partnership with Boston University to conduct ecological studies in the Amazon rainforest. This founding marked the beginning of systematic scientific investigation into biodiversity within this forest region.
The station works closely with Huaorani communities who live in the region and participate in conservation efforts. This partnership shapes daily life at the location and demonstrates how scientific research and traditional knowledge work together.
The location is remote and has limited internet connectivity, so visitors should prepare for isolation from the wider world. People are encouraged to plan for longer stays and check with the managing institution about current conditions and how to arrange access.
This area is home to more species of reptiles, amphibians, insects, birds, and bats in one location than anywhere else in South America. The concentration of life has made it a global hotspot for biological variety and draws scientists from around the world.
