La Corota Island Flora Sanctuary, Flora and fauna sanctuary on La Cocha Lake, Colombia
La Corota Island Flora Sanctuary is a protected forest on an island in Lake La Cocha, home to hundreds of plant species and surrounded by reed belts. The small territory contains all layers of an Andean forest ecosystem within its boundaries.
Colombia established this protected area in 1977 to preserve a rare lake-island forest ecosystem found nowhere else in the Andes. This action recognized the need to safeguard this singular natural formation.
Local Quillasinga indigenous communities regard the sanctuary as an ancestral sacred site, participating in traditional medicine practices and natural heritage conservation.
Access is available daily and visitors explore the island through guided tours with small group sizes. Expect wet and humid conditions throughout your visit and plan accordingly.
The forest is home to more than 65 bird species that nest and feed among the trees, making it a remarkable place for bird watching. This concentration of species creates an unexpected opportunity to observe Andean avifauna in a small area.
