Yaguas National Park

Yaguas National Park is a protected area covering 868,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest in northern Peru with numerous rivers and wetlands. The landscape consists of dense forest vegetation and varied terrain that supports different types of ecosystems.

The park received official protected status in 2018 following decades of conservation work by local communities and environmental advocates. This designation marked a significant milestone in safeguarding this region.

Several indigenous groups live within the park and practice traditional ways of using the forest's resources based on knowledge passed down through generations. Their presence shapes how the land is used and valued today.

Visiting requires advance planning through official channels because of the remote location and limited facilities available in the area. Travelers should arrange guided tours with authorized operators before arriving.

The waters within the park hold approximately 550 fish species, representing two-thirds of Peru's freshwater fish diversity. This extraordinary concentration of aquatic life makes it one of the world's most important sites for freshwater fish.
